'The Wolfman'

How hard can it possibly be to make a proficient remake of a classic horror film? Since vampires have been the latest fad with shows like “True Blood” and the “Twilight” movies infecting the cinematic universe, now would seem like the optimal time to remake other films starring things that go bump in the night.

Universal Studios took a crack at summoning the spooks of yesteryear with 2004’s atrocity “Van Helsing,” and now they take a shot at redemption with the opening of “The Wolfman.” The aforementioned conundrum — regarding the capability of producers and directors to make a passable classic — is answered by “Wolfman” with a swift and resounding “we make these because we’re bored and need material.” Going into this movie optimistically will only result in a sense of betrayal by your own instincts.

“The Wolfman” takes place in Victorian-era Great Britain, where a malicious figure, the Wolfman, is dismantling and dismembering a small community. Enter Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro, “Che”), brother of the latest Wolfman victim, who returns from America to lament with his father (Anthony Hopkins, “Beowulf”) and his brother’s widow (Emily Blunt, “The Young Victoria”). Although his return may be some evidence of brotherly love, the audience is not treated to more than five seconds of character development of the deceased sibling, and it is unclear as to what Lawrence plans to do now that he is in the country.

After some uneventful mulling around with the locals, Lawrence finds himself helping the cause in the midst of an attack. Unfortunately, he is bitten by the beast and is doomed to become one himself. And so the movie takes off. That’s it.

While this summary may shock you as simplistic, what’s more shocking is how a plot exponentially more simplistic somehow made its way to production, much less with a star-studded cast, including the underrated and overlooked talent of Hugo Weaving (“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”).

During the current era of cinema, manipulation and redefinition is necessary to make an old horror applicable to audiences. Who is to blame for not otherwise satisfying the craze of these audiences? We may find exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop before this question is answered.

Despite a short list of accomplishments, director Joe Johnston is by no means a rookie. He tackled the dramatic realm efficiently with “October Sky” and took a meager poke at action with “Jurassic Park III,” but his real calling — at least in the ’80s — was visuals for the old “Star Wars” flicks, and he even netted an Oscar for special effects for “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” One would assume dabbling in these three areas would make Johnston one talented chap, but “Wolfman” would be the exception to this assumption.

Del Toro, Hopkins, Blunt and Weaving are all incredibly worthy of praise, yet Johnston and the screenwriters make these stars shimmer instead of shine. Each of their characters is so shallowly introduced and developed they might as well be written off as extras. Perhaps a more seasoned director and writers more interested in reinventing an old classic could have produced some kind of feature that would have given these actors a good reason to throw “Wolfman” on their résumé.

To sum up the general gist of this movie, it is a feeble attempt at resurrecting the simple plots that governed the ideals of classic horror flicks. Back in the day, all audiences required from a sci-fi thriller was a unique and bizarre social commentary. The A-bomb led pictures like “Godzilla” and “Them,” the Red Scare inspired “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” — and every subsequent remake — and the heads of Universal still think these topics will keep an audience entertained. Science fiction hasn’t been so much of an empty void of creativity that audiences require an identical copy of the old “Wolfman.” Although the movie boasts a great cast, the simplicity of the writing — essentially taken straight from the original — isn’t enough to disguise a hearty dosage of bland plot. Although there is an ample amount of Blunt side boob, it still isn’t enough to save a classic.

Shah Rukh Khan, the biggest star that most Americans have never heard of, is premiering his new movie “My Name Is Khan” in the oil rich capital of Abu Dhabi tonight.

Khan, the hottest film and commercial figure in India, is moving outside his usual love story-and-dance formula to tackle the politically sensitive topic of anti-Muslim discrimination. The film reunites the box-office winning team of Kajol Devgan and Shah Rukh Khan, India’s two biggest actors, and director Karan Johar, who is often described as the man whose movies makes Indians fall in love.

Johar says his latest film stretched his story-making powers, as the movie goes beyond the usual Bollywood formula to focus on the wave of anti-Muslim discrimination that has swept the West and his own country over the last decade. “I tried to convey all of the various opinions, facts and propaganda that comes with the global issue of discrimination and intolerance towards a race of people completely unassociated by the evils of terrorism,” Johar said ahead of the film’s premiere.

It’s a message that resonates deeply in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere in the Arab world, where many have felt the blowback against their religion in the wake of Al Qaeda attacks across the globe.

The serious mien of the film didn’t diminish the glitz of the red carpet outside the hall before the film’s premiere. Sashaying in designer gowns, the A-list stars of the film poised for hundreds of paparazzi and screaming fans. Indian television journalists jostled against an anxious crowd to broadcast the first sighting of Khan from inside the gilded atrium of the palace.

Last year, the capital of the United Arab Emirates launched the $1 billion movie production company Imagenation Abu Dhabi. With its deep pockets, Imagenation has moved aggressively into movie financing, filling a gnawing hole that appeared in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Last fall, hundreds of executives from both American and European studios gathered in Abu Dhabi to network during the city-state’s third-annual film festival. “My Name is Khan” is the vehicle through which executives here hope to make Abu Dhabi a household name in America and India, the world’s two largest movie-going nations.

Imagenation co-produced “My Name Is Khan” along with Fox Star Studios, a joint venture between 20th Century Fox and Star, both of which are owned by News Corp., the parent company of The Wall Street Journal.

Fox Star Studios will market and distribute in India, while Fox Searchlight will market and distribute the film in the United States and 20th Century Fox International will distribute across the rest of the world.

Once i got hulk the incredible guide i learned that he actually did get much taller than i had thought. It was interesting to see the same thing from different angels at the same time but it was also a bit distracting in other scenes. David believed he passed something on to his son bruce and was working to find a cure when his research was shut down by the military. As an adult bruce was working with gamma radiation to find a way to use it in a helpful way. Sam elliot fit the part fine.

That aspect of the hulk wasn’t explored enough in my opinion. I know from the book that he would get stronger as he got angrier but there wasn’t any mention that he would get bigger as well. As an adult he was a brilliant scientist who was unsure about other aspects of life without being a geek or nerd. Some of those changes may bother fans of the comics. He really wasn’t bad even though his acts did cause a lot of damage and hurt some people. At that point it seemed like they just had a working relationship.

Nick nolte fit the part very well. I thought that change in the research that bruce was involved in and the accident worked fine as a modern update. It was also shown how bruce had nightmares as he got older. Betty was the scientist working with bruce. When he thought she was going to be hurt his only thought was to protect her. When bruce and betty were first shown working on their project that part of the movie did move a little slower and it did seem to take a while before the pace picked up which might bore some viewers.

In fact, the film arrives shrouded in such a fog of expectation, preconception, anticipation and (now with more post-Hillary bite!) gender bias that it's hard to see -- or write about -- the movie for the trees.

Which is too bad, because Michael Patrick King, who executive produced the show (with series creator Darren Star) and wrote and directed the movie, has done some brave, surprising things with it, mining territory that's been all but abandoned by Hollywood. It's hard, in fact, to think of any other recent examples of movies that explore the complicated emotional lives of characters comically without stooping to adolescent silliness or that are willing to go to such dark places while remaining a comedy in the Shakespearean sense -- all's well that ends well.

"Sex and the City" can't rightly be called a romantic comedy in the dismal, contemporary sense, though it is at times romantic and is consistently very funny. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), now in their 40s and 50s, continue to navigate the choppy waters of urban life, negotiating relationships, work, fertility and friendship, only now the stakes are higher, the risks are bigger and decisions feel more permanent.

For a film that delights in indulging in frivolity at every possible turn, it examines subjects that most movies don't dare graze for their terrifying seriousness. And when it does, the movie handles them with surprising grace, wit and maturity. In other words, it's a movie for grown-ups of all ages. The press and industry screening I attended was uncharacteristically packed with women in their 20s, and my guess is that their interest had zero to do with the inclusion of Jennifer Hudson as Carrie's personal assistant -- though her character, Louise, is likable and allows the writer to expand the scope of the film from a story about four friends living in New York into a tale about the contemporary lives of urban women from early adulthood to maturity.

Tickets for the ArcLight Hollywood's 12:01 a.m. Friday show of the movie based on the HBO series sold out so quickly that the theater added a 12:02 show. Then 12:03. And so on, for seven post-midnight shows, and 1,800 tickets sold.

And they aren't just there for the flick; they're making an event of it. By 10:30 Thursday night, the bar and restaurant were full of groups of women, and the occasional man, downing cocktails and awaiting the midnight hour. "If you see a cosmo on a table, they're going to 'Sex and the City,' " said waiter James Warfield as he carried a tray bearing the show's signature drink. "I have a lot more ladies than usual."

IF YOU ARE A PLOT PURIST AND DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE, DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING!

It's a measure of the unique panache of the aging guy in the fedora that people started lining up hours ahead in the full midday Cannes sun for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And in the few moments of silence and dark screen before the Lucasfilm logo appeared, uncontainable devotees in the balcony began singing the famous four that's as much a part of the Indy experience as the expectation of a bullwhip well used.

I felt like singing, too. And I burst out in a laugh of pleasure when Henry Jones II first appears — rumpled, grimy, his gray hair thinning, within sight of his iconic topper but not within reach. (Indy has been kidnapped by Russians posing as U.S. military personnel in the New Mexico desert — long story — and brought to the feet of Cate Blanchett, in rich Natasha Badanov mode as a Soviet mind-control expert in hot pursuit of the title skull.) There's joy and a middle-aged playfulness to the best of Steven Spielberg's unlikely sequel. And I mean that as a full compliment: All the movieman's themes are here, his interests, obsessions, trademark strengths as a cinematic storyteller, and Spielbergian "tells," too, with hubcap and sideview mirror reflections dating back over 35 years to Duel.

Harrison Ford? Terrific — and re-energized after too many recent action roles he has appeared to sourly resent. This older, creakier (but still spry) adventure hero wears his worldly wryness with even greater earned authority. Shia LaBeouf? Inspired, channeling one-half James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, the other half Spielbergian Everyson.

The "but" that dangles in this instant reaction (a longer, more archaeological review will follow) is that The Crystal Skull threatens at times to crumble under the weight of all the impersonal zigging and zagging loaded on for the sake of special effects. The precious ancient cranium itself — where it came from, how to keep it out of the hands of the Russkies and get it to where it belongs — is of little interest, no matter how many waterfalls loom, monkeys swing, and locks unmesh. The first bravura action sequence is kickass, the 11th or 12th is industrial filler that makes swaths of the two-hour running time drag.

I love Indy, and his long-lost son, and Karen Allen as his rediscovered old flame, Marion Ravenwood, too. As with every Spielberg movie, family psychology drives the story, while skeletons, extraterrestrials, jungle tribesmen, and foreign villains make the most noise. I get the rudimentary, mass-audience political jokes and allusions, from the bomb-shelter-era quaintness of old-style Russkies to the tweedy dean who says, "I barely recognize this country anymore." I also think time has not dulled Indy's survival instincts, but neither has it inspired any risk taking on the part of the franchise owners. This is a 90-minute story pumped up to 123 minutes, not so much on steroids as on Frappuccino, and the chance sing the old four-note tune again.
